LoopIt estimates where a photograph was taken. By uploading an image you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1. What LoopIt does, and how well

LoopIt runs several independent techniques over an image — matching it against a gallery of known locations, reading any legible text, reasoning about architecture and terrain, reading embedded camera metadata, and comparing against street-level photography — and produces one or more candidate locations with a stated confidence.

The result is an estimate and is frequently wrong. On an internal evaluation set of street-level photographs it placed about 32% of images within one kilometre and about 58% within twenty-five kilometres. Ordinary photographs taken on a phone perform worse than that, and roughly half of all uploads produce no confident answer at all.

You must not rely on a LoopIt result for any decision with legal, financial, safety or personal consequence. It is not evidence. It is not a location service. It is a guess with its reasoning shown.

2. What you may not upload

You must not upload an image if:

• you do not have the right to upload it, or doing so infringes someone else’s copyright or privacy;
• your purpose is to locate, identify, track, monitor or approach a person who has not consented to that — including a former partner, an acquaintance, a public figure, or the subject of a photograph found online;
• it contains child sexual abuse material, or depicts a person in a private or intimate setting without their consent;
• it was obtained through a security camera, a device, or an account you were not authorised to access.

Using LoopIt to work out where somebody lives, works or spends time, against their wishes, is a serious misuse of it. It is prohibited regardless of how the image was obtained, and regardless of whether the image is otherwise public. Depending on where you are, it may also be a criminal offence.

3. Automated safeguards

When a photograph appears to have identifiable people as its main subject, LoopIt reduces the precision of the location it reports. This is a mitigation, not a guarantee, and it does not make the prohibited uses above acceptable.

4. Your images

You keep all rights to what you upload. You grant LoopIt only the permission needed to run the analysis and show you the result: storing the image, sending it to the third-party model providers listed in the privacy notice, and displaying it back to you and to anyone you give the result link to.

Uploaded images are deleted after thirty days. The analysis result is retained without the image so that the confidence model can be improved.

5. Results are private, and links are not secret

Results are not listed, indexed or browsable. Each one lives at an address containing 128 bits of randomness, which cannot practically be guessed.

But anyone holding that link can open the result. If you share it, you are sharing the photograph and its estimated location. Treat the link as you would the photograph itself.

6. Availability

LoopIt is provided as-is, without warranty. It may be slow, unavailable, or may stop entirely without notice. Analyses depend on third-party providers that can fail or rate-limit us, and when they do, results are weaker or absent.

7. Suspension

We may refuse or remove any upload, and block access, where we believe these terms have been breached — particularly section 2. We do not have to explain the decision in advance.

8. Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, LoopIt is not liable for any loss arising from use of the service or reliance on a result, including where a result is inaccurate.

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

9. Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top shows the current version. Continuing to use LoopIt after a change means accepting it.

If an image of you has been uploaded and you want it removed, write to that address and it will be dealt with promptly. You do not need an account and you do not need to explain yourself.
